India has raised genocide of 1971 in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) at the United Nation on' International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this crime on Wednesday (December 9).

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India circulated a tweet issued by Indian Permanent Representative at the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti saying "let's pay homage to 3 million killed and 200,000 or more women raped in erstwhile East Pakistan by Pakistan army and religious militias(rajakars) in 1971 in most horrific episode in human history. Never again". He tagged the tweet @UN _GP_Rtop# Prevent Genocide.

The 9th December marks the International day of genocide as well as the 72nd anniversary of the 1948 Convention of the Prevention and punishment of the Crime of Genocide, the first human rights treaty adopted by the General assembly.

The convention signifies the international community's commitment to "never again" and provides the first international legal definitions of "genocide" widely accepted at national and International levels. It also establishes a duty for state parties to prevent and punish then crime of genocide.

At the 2005 World summit, member states committed to protect their population from genocides, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crime against humanity as well as the incitement. They agreed that when states require assistance to fulfill that responsibility, the international community must be ready to assist them and when states manifestly fail o protect their population from those crimes, the international community must be ready to take actions, collectively in accordance with the United Nations charter.

But Bangladesh wants to declare March 25 as Genocide Day globally, in remembrance of the atrocities carried out by the Pakistan Army on the same day in 1971. The Bangladesh Parliament in 2017 unanimously adopted a resolution declaring March 25 as the Genocide day. Dhaka has sent official letter to the UN.

Sources in Indian government has said if Bangladesh wants to peruse the case in the year of birth centenary of Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the 50th year of Liberation struggle India is ready to support the move.
