Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives (LGRD) Minister Tazul Islam said BNP founder Ziaur Rahman was the mastermind behind the killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members.

"If Ziaur Rahman had tried, he could have stopped the brutal killing carried out on Bangabandhu's family. But he didn’t. When Zia was informed after the assassination of Bangabandhu, he said so what? It’s a matter of politics. We have noting to do about politics", he said.

The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a virtual discussion titled "Bangabandhu and Bangladesh" on Friday night.

'Bangabandhur Adarsha o Muktijuddher Chetonai Biswashi Progotishil Shikkhok Shomaj', a faction of pro-Awami League teachers of Jahangirnagar University organized the programme marking the 46th martyrdom anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the National Mourning Day.

Tazul said Ziaur Rahman and his associates have ruled the country for almost 21 years after the murder of Bangabandhu as they established razakars and traitors in this country.

Zia appointed razakars and treacherous as ministers as well as continued to torture the freedom fighters, the minister said.

“Bangabandhu was a visionary leader. Throughout his life he has fought against injustice. During Pakistani rule, Bangabandhu had landed in jail again and again in conspiracy cases. But he did not give up. He stood up against injustice with more power”, Tazul added.

Dr. Md. Khabir Uddin, Professor of JU Environmental Sciences department conducted the program while Prof. Abdul Jabber Hawlader, President of Bangabandhur Adarsha o Muktijuddher Chetonai Biswashi Progotishil Shikkhok Shomaj' chaired the event.

Former JU Vice Chancellor (VC) and former member of Public Service Commission (PSC), Prof Dr. Shariff Enamul Kabir, former JU pro-VC Prof Abul Hossain and renowned entomologist Prof Dr. Kabirul Bashar of JU Zoology department spoke at the function among others.
