Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif yesterday called upon all to maintain communal harmony so that none can hatch conspiracy to thwart the long-practiced synchronization among different communities and beliefs in the soil.

"We will have to stand together to resist the conspirators who are out to foil the communal harmony of thousands years and create panic among the people's mindset," he told a press conference at Awami League president's political office at Dhanmondi in reply to the remarks of BNP about the violence on Hindus and their temples at Nasirnagar upazila in Brahmanbaria.

Replying to another query of newsman, he said they asked the local leaders and workers of Awami League to stand beside the victims after the attack.

"Though we asked our local leaders and workers to stand beside Hindus, the community came under arson attack again. We asked our leaders who failed to perform responsible role in the incident to refrain from party activities," he added.

The AL joint general secretary said the sending of BNP delegation led by Hafij Uddin is a mockery with the minority community that came under attack as the people will never forget the attack on Hindus that took place at the Hafij Uddin's constituency at Tamujuddin in Bhola during the then BNP government.

"Houses, shops and temples of Hindus were attacked and vandalized at nonstop 28-days at Dasherhat Bazar of Tamujuddin upazila in 1992 for only because of giving vote for 'Boat' (Awami League's election symbol)," Hanif said.

Hanif condemned the attacks on Hindus of the country during the BNP-Jamaat government regime and said they never stayed beside the community after the attacks.

Referring to an incident, the AL leader said Purnima Sheel in Sirajganj was brutally tortured by BNP-Jamaat men during their tenure.

AL Joint General Secretary Abdur Rahman, Organizing Secretaries Ahmad Hossain, AKM Enamul Haque Shamim and Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, AL leaders Advocate Afjal Hossain, Sujit Roy Nandi, Faridunahar Laily, Delwar Hossain and Aminul Islam Amin were present at the press conference, among others.
