IGP pledges quick action against Nasirnagar offenders

Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Huq yesterday said those involved in demolition of idols in Nasirnagar of Brahmanbaria would be brought to book quickly.

He said this while exchanging views with leaders of Hindu, Buddhist and Christian communities at the police headquarters in the city, said a police headquarters press release.

"This type of incident is very sad and unexpected. We are deeply shocked over this type of denouncing incident," the IGP said.

He said the police show 'zero tolerance' toward such incidents and the government is very conscious and active in this regard.

Expressing sympathy to the affected members of Hindu community in Nasirnagar, Shahidul Huq said, "The police administration is beside you. It is our duty to ensure your security."

He said the people concerned have been directed to form committees at upazila, district and divisional levels with representatives of all religions to maintain communal harmony.

Leaders of Hindu, Buddhist and Christian communities demanded fair probe into the Nasirnagar incident and speedy trial of the real culprits.

They also demanded forming a monitoring cell at the police headquarters to monitor cases over attacks on religious minorities.

Additional IGP Dr. Mohammad Jeved Ali Patwari, Additional IGP Fatema Begum, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner M Asaduzzaman Mian and Hindu, Buddhist and Christian community leaders, including Shudhananda Mahathero, Ranojit Kumar Barua, Dr. Pronab Kumar Barua, Ashok Barua, Nirmol Rozario, Jayonto Sen Dipu, Advocate Taposh Kumar Paul, Advocate Kishore Ranjan Mandol, JL Bhoumik, Narayan Saha Moni, Shyamol Kumar Palit, Hemanto I Koraiya, Satyarnjan Baroi, Pijush Bandopaddhaya, Dr. Arup Ratan Chowdhury, Subir Nandi, Shyamol Dutta, Swapan Kumar Saha and Bhanu Ranjan Chakravarty, were present at the meeting, among others.
