AL-Juba League clash over water body leaves 3 dead, 22 injured

Three people were shot dead and 22 others injured in a clash between ruling Awami League and its youth front Juba League in Dirai upazila of Sunamganj over taking possession of a local water body on Tuesday.

Our Sunamganj correspondent said the deceased are Tajul Islam, 33, son of Chan Ullah of Hatia village; Shaharul Islam, 28, son of Isahaq Mia of Akilpur village; and Uzzal Mia, 30. All are from the same upazila.

According to locals and police, the followers of Dirai municipality mayor and also upazila AL joint general secretary Mosharraf Miah had long been at loggerheads with the men of Ekram Hossain, a former member of upazila Juba League convening committee and a resident of Hatia village.

Locals also said all the three deceased were the supporters of Ekram Hossain.

Ekram Hossain recently took on lease the water body nearby Jalia river from the government and set up a fish enclosure there.

The clash ensued at around 1:00pm when his men went there to take control of the water body from the control of Mosharraf Miah’s men.

The injured were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
