Bangladesh is role model for disaster management- Maya

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya yesterday said Bangladesh has been turned into a role model for disaster management in the world as the country attained the ability to face natural disasters.

"We have been able to minimize losses of lives and property caused by natural calamities by undertaking different risk reduction and preparedness activities during the present government," he said this while handing over 250 items of disaster management instruments to the Chittagong Fire Service office this evening, at Agrabad Fire Brigade office.

He said China has gifted huge modern disaster evacuation instruments to Bangladesh as per its commitment made during the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to China.

Maya said the people should not be panicked during disaster period and said the natural calamities should be faced with courage and patience. In this context, he said, Bangladesh has achieved the ability to forecast disaster.

The minister also stressed the need for creating massive awareness among the country's people to minimize the damage.

Mohammad Shamsul Arefin, Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong presided over the function while Management and Relief Secretary M Shah Kamal, Divisional Commissioner Ruhul Amin, Director General (DG)of Fire Service and Civil Defense Ali Ahmed Khan and DG of Disaster Management and Relief Riaj Ahmed among others, spoke on the occasion.
