Full text of Rakib murder verdict released

The Supreme Court (SC) released the full text of the High Court (HC) verdict in a case filed for killing Rakib, a minor boy from Khulna.

The SC published the 39-page verdict at its website (www.supremecourt.gov.bd) on Wednesday (May 3)

On April 4, the HC commuted the punishment for accused Md Sharif Sheikh and Md Mintu Khan and handed over life imprisonment. The accused were also fined Tk 50, 000 each.

However, Sharif and Mintu were earlier awarded death sentence in a judge court order.

An HC bench comprising Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim and Justice M Jahangir Hossain delivered the verdict revising death reference, jail appeal plea, penal appeal, and judge court verdict.

The court began the hearing on appeal and death reference in Rakib murder case on January 10. Later on March 29, the same bench set the date of the verdict.

Deputy Attorney General Zahirul Haque Zahir, Assistant Attorney General Atiqul Haque Selim and Bilkis Fatema moved as prosecution at the court. Lawyer Golam Md Chowdhury Alal moved for the convicts.

Rakib was brutally tortured to death by pumping air through his rectum at a motorcycle repairing garage in Tut Para area of Khulna on August 3, 2015.

Rakib’s father M Nurul Alam filed a case accusing Sharif, the garage owner; Mintu Khan, Sharif’s aide and Beauty Begum, Sharif’s mother with Khulna Sadar police station on the next day.

The trial court completed the judicial process speedily of the case and handed over death sentence to Sharif, Mintu and acquitted Beauty Begum on November 8, 2015.

Later, the two convicts appealed against the order with the HC seeking acquittal.
