Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif today said judiciary is working independently and that's why BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has taken new dates for 140 times in different cases.

"Khaleda Zia is delaying cases without appearing before court months after months. Such cases would have been disposed of by this time, had the government interfered the judiciary," he told newsmen after a view-exchange with party leaders and workers at his residence here.

Asked about the remark of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir that the government is making interference in the independence of the judiciary, the AL leader said cases like Begum Khaleda Zia prove that the judiciary is working independently.

Hanif said BNP leaders including Mirza Fakhrul are now talking about judiciary and democracy but BNP's founder Ziaur Rahman stopped the trial of the killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by framing laws when his party was in power.

He said BNP also wanted to make parliament dysfunctional as the BNP chairperson joined it for only eight days.

"BNP did nothing except making vulgar and indecent remarks in parliament," the AL leader said.

District AL president Sadar Uddin Khan and general secretary Azgar Ali, joint general secretary Engineer Faruk Hossain and district Jubo League convener Rabiul Islam, among others, were present on the occasion.
