Govt works for no load-shedding in Ramadan

The government has undertaken various measures to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across the country during the upcoming Ramadan.

"We will put in our best efforts to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during the holy month of Ramadan across the country," State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said today.

He said some 9,212 MW power is being generated presently in the country, while the generation capacity reached to 15,351MW. The government is putting in its relentless efforts to ensure adequate power supply across the country.

"The power supply would be uninterrupted during the Ramadan month if there is no natural calamity in the country. Recently, a national grid tower was damaged by natural disaster," the state minister said. He said the government would take necessary measures to produce required electricity according to the demand in peak hour and around 10,000 MW power would be generated during the Ramadan, if needed.

Earlier, the power ministry at a meeting discussed the overall situation of electricity supply during the current summer season and the upcoming Ramadan, and has undertaken various measures in this regard.

As per the decision, all shopping malls alongside the individual shops, laundry shops, welding machines and rerolling mills are to pull down their shutters by 8:00 pm. During the meeting, the people have been urged for avoiding use of air conditioners and other high-powered home appliances during Iftar and Sehri time, while petrol pumps, shopping malls should avoid illumination in the greater interest during the Ramadan.

During the Ramadan, all Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling stations would have to remain closed from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm to prevent the loss of electricity.

On his recent visit to Stockholm, the state minister said the initiative to modernize the National Load Dispatch Center would continue. In the production and distribution system, Bangladesh would take support from developed countries including Sweden.

An improved transmission system will be developed by coordinating production, transmission, load management and distribution, he said.
