Supreme Court to dispose of 17 war crimes cases

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) is waiting to hear 17 cases of crimes against humanity, disposed of earlier by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

"The cases will be heard and disposed of in phases," attorney general office sources said.

The 17 cases include appeals of Jamaat leader Mawlana Abdus Subhan, ATM Azharul Islam, former Jatiya Party state minister Syed Mohammad Kaiser and former BNP lawmaker Sakhawat Hossain.

The apex court so far has disposed of seven war crimes cases, last one of Delwar Hossain Sayedee on May 15. The Appellate Division on that day dismissed two pleas, seeking review of the apex court judgment that commuted his sentence of death to imprisonment till his natural death.

Earlier the Supreme Court disposed of crimes against humanity cases against Abdul Quader Molla, Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Muzahid, Matiur Rahman Nizami, Mir Quasem Ali and BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.

The six have already been executed after completion of all the legal procedures.

Meanwhile, the ICT-1 on May 9 kept the judgement against six Gaibandha men CAV (a Latin legal term meaning the court awaits judgement), saying it would pronounce verdict in the case any day.

Earlier, the two tribunals have passed judgement in 28 cases.
