President, PM mourns loss of lives in landslides

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday expressed profound shock at the death of many people in three districts Chittagong, Rangamati and Bandarban following series of landslides triggered by torrential rains.

The President and the Premier expressed their deep shock and sympathy in separate messages.

In a condolence message, the President M Abdul Hamid expressed his profound shock at the death of civilians in Chittagong, Rangamati and Bandarban and also two rescue members of Bangladesh Army belonging to Army.

He also asked authorities concerned to complete the rescue operation within the shortest possible time and ensure proper treatment of those injured in the landslides, President's Press Secretary Joynal Abedin told BSS.

Abdul Hamid prayed for eternal peace and salvation of the departed souls and conveyed deep sympathy to members of the bereaved families.

In another condolence message, the Prime Minister, now on her way to London en route Stockholm in a bilateral visit to Sweden, offered her sympathy to the bereaved family members and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.

The Prime Minister asked all concerned officials to take immediate steps to rescue people trapped under rubbles and ensure their proper treatment.

She also asked the officials for taking necessary measures for last rituals of the deceased.

Torrential rains overnight triggered a series of landslides in southeastern Bangladesh hills killing some 50 people including two army officers in Chittagong, Rangamati and Bandarban, officials said.

Many of the victims belonged to the ethnic minority or tribal groups in Rangamati and Bandarban as they are used to live in their makeshift abode on or along the hills.
