The mosquito-borne chikungunya outbreak may remain in the city until September this year, warned experts in the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B).

The experts also urged people to keep their surroundings clean, and dispose of waste regularly to avoid chikungunya and dengue fever.

They came up with the call on Thursday in a press briefing arranged by the ICDDR,B.

Director of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) Meerjady Sabrina told newsmen that a total of 86 cases of chikungunya virus have been reported from Dhaka city from April to May in 2017.

These cases were reported mainly from Dhaka city’s Kalabagan, Kanthalbagan and Rampura areas.

Director general of Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS) Abul Kalam Azad said no need to be worried about chikungunya as it is not deadly.

“Chikungunya is spread by Aedes mosquito. Sources of static water like refrigerator, tyre, and others help breed Aedes mosquitoes in urban areas. So, city dwellers are facing this illness more than the village people,” he said.
