The Malaysian authorities rounded up some 35 undocumented migrants in two separate raids on Saturday.

Those detained were from Myanmar (22), Nepal (nine), Indonesia (three) and Bangladesh (one), Perak Immigration Operations chief Suhairie Bah Ali was quoted to have said.

The immigration authorities conducted the raids at a food processing factory in the Menglembu industrial estate and a construction site at Taman Menglembu Impiana Adril between 8.30am and noon, according to the report.

The authorities reportedly started raids to catch undocumented foreign workers, following the 30 June deadline for employers to register their foreign employees to obtain e-cards (enforcement card).

"We have also detained the factory owner, in his 40s, for investigation. He will be allowed bail after that," the official told the media.

Suhairie was said to have added that the operation was carried out to check premises for ‘illegal foreign workers’, following the deadline.

Immigration director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali had reportedly said on Friday that a nationwide crackdown would begin on 1 July, stressing that no more extension would be given after the deadline.

The e-card, which was launched on 15 February, functions as a temporary confirmation of employment for illegal workers, which replaces valid travel documents from their respective countries.

The card is given out to employees for free, and is valid until 15 February 2018.
