City-dwellers were hit hard by unbearable traffic jam in many parts of the capital on Wednesday.

Hundreds of vehicles got stranded for long due to the traffic jam.

Traffic jam, an integral part of city life, took a serious turn due to potholes developed on the streets coupled with rain and waterlogging.

Indiscriminate digging of roads for metro rail and other projects has aggravated the situation.

Rapa Plaza point on Mirpur-New Market road was inundated due to heavy rains on Tuesday night obstructing vehicular movement.

Traffic congestion was acute in Mirpur, Agargaon, Panthapath, Bijoy Sarani, Mohakhali, Dhanmondi, Mirpur Technical, Sukrabad, New Market, Motijheel, Arambagh, Fakirapool, Shantinagar, Moghbazar, Malibagh, Purana Paltan, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Sheorapara, Rokeya Sarani, Shahbagh, Badda, Norda, Shahjadpur, Pragati Sarani, Banani,  Uttara and Gabtoli areas.

Service holders, businessmen, students and other people could not reach their destinations timely as hundreds of vehicles got stranded for long due to the traffic snarl.

As vehicular movement was seriously hampered, ambulances carrying patients failed to rush the hospitals in time.

Pedestrians had to wade through ankle to knee-deep water on almost all the main roads, lanes and by-lanes of the city.

Kazol Hossain, a lawyer at Dhaka court, said, “I started my journey from Rapa Plaza point at 8:00am and reached Kalyanpur bus stand at 11:00am. My work plan for the day was marred due to the traffic jam.”

Hassan, a private ‘varsity student, said, “It took three hours for me to go to Jamuna Future Park point on Pragati Sarani from Gabtoli.

I left Gabtoli in the morning and reached Kalyanpur two hours later.”

Affected people claimed it took an hour for crossing a short distance between Norda and Shahjadpur.

Vehicular movement came to a halt from Rampura bridge to Natun Bazar intersection.

Shoravi, a student of a private university at Banani, said, “I left my house at Kuril at 7:00am for attending exam at 11:00am. I could not revise some answers because of wastage of time for traffic jam.”
