Two suspected muggers were shot in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Azimpur area of Dhaka today.

Mosharraf, 39, and Monir Hossein, 35, suffered bullet wounds in their right and left thigh respectively. They are now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Rab said.

The “gunfight took” between a group of muggers and a team of Rab-10 after the law enforcers, acting on a tip-off, went there to nab them, leaving the duo injured,  said Shahabuddin Khan, commanding officer of Rab-10.

The elite force also recovered a car, two pistols and two rounds of bullet from the spot. However, other members of the team fled the spot by another car, the Rab official said.

“The muggers, in guise of members of detective branch (DB) of police, used to mug people after taking them aside in fake detention,” he said adding that there was a Dhaka Metropolitan Police sticker on the car they have recovered.
