Environment and Forest Minister Anwar Hossain Manju has claimed that the number of Tigers in the Sundarbans is on the rise.

“The country is moving forward under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina. We have some tiger conservation programmes of our own. They are very safe in the Sundarbans, where their number is increasing,” the minister said on Saturday without naming any source of the information.

Minister Manju came up with the remark while addressing a seminar organised to mark the World Tiger Day at the Bagerhat.

He added that Bangladesh is no longer dependant on foreigners to protect the Sundarbans, and the government has taken many programmes regarding it.

Director of Tiger Monitoring Survey and Forest Conservator of Khulna Amir Hossain Chowdhury said camera trapping has completed taking photographs of the Satkhira range of the forest. The snaps are being analysed in lab, he said. He mentioned that it would take two years to find out the exact number of Tigers.
