Sheikh Kamal's 68th birth anniversary observed

The 68th birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed today in the city as elsewhere across the country with an elaborate programme.

The day's programme started at 8 in the morning with the placing of wreaths and flower petals at the portrait of Shaheed Sheikh Kamal on the premises of the country's premiere club at Dhanmondi, Abahani Limited, which the slain young leader and connoisseur of sports established after independence.

Leaders and workers of the ruling Awami League including AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Joint General Secretaries Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif and Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Organising Secretaries Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and Enamul Haque, Labour Affairs Secretary Habibur Rahman Siraj, Cultural Affairs Secretary Ashim Kumar Ukil, Dhaka North City AL General Secretary Shahe Alam Murad and South General Secretary Sadeq Khan, among others, placed wreaths at the portrait of Sheikh Kamal.

Besides, Dhaka North City AL, Dhaka South City AL, Mohila Awami League, Juba Mohila League, Awami Swechchasebak League, Awami Juba League, Jatiya Sramik League, Chhatra League, Dhaka District Mohila Awami League, directors of Abahani Ltd, Abahani Samarthak Goshthy, officers and players of the club and various other bodies also placed wreaths and flowers there as a mark of respect to Sheikh Kamal.

Later, at 9 am, leaders and workers of Awami League, its associated and likeminded bodies, Abahani Limited and different sports organisations placed wreaths at the Banani grave of the late sporting icon. 

Quran Khwani, milad and doa mahfils also were organised at Banani graveyard praying for eternal peace of the departed soul of Sheikh Kamal marking the day.

Sheikh Kamal's relatives and friends organized a discussion at Jatiya Press Club (JPC) in the morning.

AL General Secretary Obaidul Qauder addressed the discussion as the chief guest with senior journalist Abed Khan in the chair.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, AL Youth and Sports Secretary Harunur Rashid, JPC President Shafiqur Rahman and cultural personalities Pijush Bandyopadhyay, among others, addressed it.

At about 11 am, Awami Swechchasebak League (ASL) organized a discussion on the premises of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in observance of the day. 

AL Advisory Council Member and also Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu addressed the discussion as the chief guest with ASL President Mollah Md Abu Kowser in the chair. ASL General Secretary Pankaj Debnath, MP, conducted the discussion.

Besides, Awami Juba League (AJL) organised a discussion at the auditorium of Shilpakala Academy at Segunbagicha in the morning. 

AJL chairman Omar Faruque Chowdhury chaired the discussion while Awami League Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak attended it as the chief guest.

AL Dhaka City North Unit organized a discussion at AL office in city's Bangabandhu Avenue with its president Abul Hasnat in the chair.

AL Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud, AL City North Unit Shahe Alam Murad and its Organizing Secretary Golam Ashraf Talukder, among others, addressed it.

Born on August 5, 1949 at Tungipara in Gopalganj, Sheikh Kamal, was a former executive member of the central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
