A police investigation has revealed that a tear gas canister lobbed by police constable Saiful Islam hit the eyes of Titumir college student Siddiqur Rahman who along with his fellow students was staging a demonstration in capital’s Shahbagh.

The investigation conducted by police’s Ramna division also found negligence of other on-duty police men to control the situation.

Besides accusing Saiful Islam - a member of police’s Public Order Management Division - the police’s investigation team recommended that the other members of police who have been found guilty of negligence should be warned.

Siddiqur Rahman sustained injuries in his eyes during a demonstration on 20 July when the policeman charged tear shells on demonstrating students of seven government colleges, affiliated to the University of Dhaka, gathered at Shahbagh intersection in the city.

Speaking to Prothom Alo on Tuesday night, deputy commissioner (Ramna Zone) of police Maruf Hossain Sardar said the report was submitted to the office of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Head of the probe body Nabid Kamal said the report was submitted after the investigation spanning 13 days.

The report highlighted the roles of police members during the incident, and included some recommendations, he added.

Earlier on 7 August, a committee formed by DMP headquarters recommended punishment for seven members of police in connection with Siddiqur’s eye injuries.

Following the incident, Siddiqur Rahman received treatment from India where the doctors said that he had little chance to get back the eyesight.

Now he has been undergoing treatment at National Eye Science Institute Hospital at Agargaon in Dhaka.
