Stocks open week down as major sectors dip

Stocks opened week down as major sectors closing the session with falling trend at both Dhaka and Chittagong Stock exchanges on Sunday.

The falling major sectors included financial institutions, pharmaceuticals and chemicals, tannery industries, mutual fund and IT sector. A total of 157 securities of the large-cap group incurred losses due to lower activities.

The broader index DSEX of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) finished the session by 13.67 points down at 5,573.08. The blue-chip DS30 and Shariah DSES followed it by 10.17 points down at 2010.88 and by 4.12 points down at 1299.91 respectively.

Out of the traded 327 issues, 188 suffered losses across the board while the trade value fell to Taka 794.48 crore from Thursday's Taka 830.44 crore and the volume to 20.84 crore shares from Thursday's 21.61 crore shares.

The major gaining issues were Matin Spinning, RSRM Steel, GSP Finance, MHSML and Salvo Chemical. The major losing companies were Prime Finance, Imam Button, Samata Leather, EBL NRB Mutual Fund and ISNLTD.

Baraka Power topped the turnover leaders followed by Lanka Bangla Finance, RSRM Steel, Islami Bank and Shasha Denims.

Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also finished Sunday's session in red, with major CASPI index closing 58.88 points down at 17,243.07. Out of the traded 241 issues, 73 advanced, 142 incurred losses and 26 remained static when 1.36 crore shares worth Taka 43.59 crore changed hands.
