25 missing as 3 launches capsize in Padma

Around 25 people went missing as three launches capsized in Padma river near WAPDA launch terminal of Naria in Shariatpur on Monday.

The incident took place around 5:00am, said leaseholder of the terminal Motahar Shikari.

A total of five launches were anchored in a BIWTC pontoon of the terminal. All of a sudden at dawn, the pontoon ripped from its moorings in erosion and powerful waves, leading capsize of the three launches in the Padma river, added Motahar Shikari. 

Around 25 workers, who were sleeping in the capsized launches, went missing, he went on saying.

The launches are Mouchak-4, Mahanagari, and Naria-1. 

On information, fire service rescuers reached the spot and were preparing to conduct a search operation, said Naria police station officer in-charge, Aslamuddin.

Divers from Fire Brigade and Civil Defence and Bangladesh Navy were also informed to reach the spot, the OC added.
