13 fishermen jailed for defying Hilsa ban

At least 13 fishermen were sentenced to 11 days imprisonment on Wednesday night by mobile courts of Lauhajang upazila for catching Hilsa fish defying a government ban.

Sources at UNO office said police, Fisheries Department and Coast Guard conducted a drive in the Padma River in the district led by Monir Hossain, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), also Executive Magistrate, and Kamrul Hasan, senior officer of Upazila Fisheries Department and arrested the fishermen at night.

The UNO said during the drive, they also seized 100,000 meters of current net (fishing net), a fishing boat and 200 kilograms of Hilsa.

The government has imposed a 22-day ban on catching, selling, transportation and hoarding of Hilsa from October 1 to October 22.
