Army arrests 7 detectives over man’s ‘kidnap’ in Teknaf

Members of Bangladesh Army arrested seven detectives for allegedly kidnapping a businessman and recovered Tk 17 lakh ransom money in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar early today.

The seven members of Detective Branch (DB) of police were held from a vehicle at an army check post in Marine Drive area, said Major Nazim Ahmed, who led the army team to the arrest.

Major Nazim is the in-charge of a relief centre at Sabrang in Teknaf.

A sub-inspector named Moniruzzaman fled the scene during the search at the check post, the army official said.

The money was recovered from the vehicle, he added.

The DB men allegedly abducted Abdul Gafur, who sells blankets, from Teknaf yesterday morning. The kidnappers set him free in Marine Drive area early today after collecting the ransom, Major Nazim said.

The alleged kidnappers initially demanded Tk 50 lakh from Gafur’s family for his release, he said.

Informed by the family members, the army team conducted the search and arrested the alleged kidnappers along with the money, the army official said.

The arrestees were taken to the temporary army camp at Sabrang, he added.
