2 executed for killing Chuadanga freedom fighter

Two condemned convicts were hanged on Thursday night at Jessore Central Jail for killing a union council member of Chuadanga in Jessore in 1994.

Jessore Central Jail super Kamal Hossain said the two convicts—Golam Rasul Jharu Sardar, in his sixties, and Makim Hossain, around fifty years old, residents of the village of Durlavpur in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga district—were executed around 11:45pm.

District magistrate of Jessore Ashraf Uddin, superintendent of police of the district Anisur Rahman and civil surgeon Dilip Kumar Roy were present during the execution.

According to the jail sources, the Jharu Sardar and Makim killed Monowar Hossain, the then member of Kumari union council in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga district and also a freedom fighter, on June 28, 1994.

Later, victim’s brother Ahim Uddin filed a case in connection with the incident.

On April 17, 2008, a lower court, in a verdict, awarded death penalty to three accused including the duo and life term imprisonment for two others.

Later, the High Court upheld death penalty for Jharu Sardar and Makim acquitting the others.
