Leaders of Garments Sramik Oikkya Forum on Thursday noon demanded to arrest the owner of Tazreen Fashions canceling his bail immediately and to provide the families of the dead workers with Tk48 lakh each as compensation.

Addressing a press conference at Topkhana Road in the capital, ahead of the 5th anniversary of Tazreen Fashions tragedy, Mushrefa Mishu, the president of the organization, said, on November 24, 2012 as many as 118 workers died and 200 others got injured in the fire tragedy of Tazreen Fashions at Nishchintapur of Ashulia.

Though five years have passed by since the incident, survivors and the families of the dead workers have not received proper compensation yet, said the president.

Demanding compensation on behalf of the workers’ associations, Mishu added that, according to the report of the investigation committee, the tragedy happened because of the negligence of the owner.

But no punishment is met out to Delwar, the owner, or any other persons who were responsible, even after five years of the tragic incident, she added.

She also alleged that, police are not presenting the witnesses before court during the trial and case hearing days. “The witnesses are also being threatened to not to appear before the court,” she added.

“It seems like government is working to protect the owner and his associates rather that punishing them”, Mishu alleged.
