Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Friday said Khaleda Zia’s conviction in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case will deepen BNP’s internal crisis not country’s political crisis.

The Minister came up with the remarks while visiting a BRTA project in Bhogra Bypass in the city.

The present government did not file the case and interfere into it. Begum Zia would have been jailed earlier if she had appeared before the court regularly. Begum Zia and her lawyers are responsible for delaying the case proceedings, he said.

Referring to BNP’s decision to make Tarique Rahman as its acting chief in absence of Khaleda Zia, Quader said Tareque was sentenced to seven years jail in money laundering case and now he has been awarded 10-yr jail in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

“Now, it is clear why BNP repealed section 7 from their charter. There is no bar for corrupted people to be leader of their party,” he said.
