The United Nations has said their political colleagues are studying the situation in Bangladesh and called for calm.

"Yes and we are continuing to monitor the situation on the ground.  As you're aware, we did appeal for calm and we expressed our concern at the violence and we continue to do so," Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary General Farhan Haq told reporters in a regular briefing on Friday.

Responding to a question from a Bangladeshi journalist on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's verdict, the UN Deputy Spokesman said if they have anything more to say about that, they will say at that point.

"We're monitoring all the various developments," he said.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, also a former prime minister, was jailed for five years on Thursday after she was found guilty in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
