Another suspected ‘drug trader’ killed in ‘gunfight’, toll crosses 140

One more suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Gachtalaghat area of Bhairab municipality in Kishoreganj district early Thursday.

The deceased is Selim Mia, son of a certain Syed Mia of Panchabati area of the municipality.

With the death of Selim Mia, the number of killed has risen to at least 141 during the anti-narcotics drives across the country in the last 25 days.

Of the 141, a total of 75 people were killed in alleged gunfights with police and DB members, 34 with RAB and 32 were killed during 'gunfights' between rival groups, claimed law enforcement agencies.

Deceased Selim was wanted in 10 cases, said Bhairab police station officer-in-charge Mokhlesur Rahman.

Being informed that a gang of drug traders were dealing narcotics in Gachtalaghat area, a team of police conducted a drive there, he said.

Sensing presence of the law enforcement, the drug peddlers fired gunshots to police which prompted them to fire back in self defence, leaving Selim dead on the spot.

Police also recovered one pistol, 510 pieces of yaba tablets and 24 bottles of Phensedyl from the spot.

However, law enforcement’s description of the incident could not be verified independently.
