Customs officials arrested a man ‘along with 1.7kg gold powder’ at Benapole port here on Friday night.

The arrestee was identified as Alamgir, 42, son of Md Ibrahim Khalil, hailing from Chatkhil in Noakhali.

Belal Hossain Chowdhury, commissioner of the Benapole Port Customs, said port officials reportedly scanned Alamgir’s bag and spotted a packet of gold powder, worth about Tk 70 lakh, while he was going to India.

Alamgir was allegedly carrying the gold powder mixing it with soil in the packet, which was proved through laboratory tests.

A case was filed.
