Suspected attacker of Madaripur college teacher killed in gunfight

Golam Faizullah alias Fahim, a 22-year old suspected attacker of Madaripur college teacher Ripon Chakrawarty, was killed in a gunfight between his associates and police at Miarchar in Sadar upazila early today.

Police sources said that Golam Faizullah Fahim, admitted himself a member of outlawed militant outfit-Hizb-ut Tahrir, was on a 10 days remand in connection with the attempt of teacher murder case.

Based on information given by Fahim, law enforcers launched a drive at Miarchar area in Sadar upazila at around 7am today to arrest his cohorts, said Md. Sarwar Hossain, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Madaripur district.

Sensing their presence, miscreants started shooting on the law enforcers, promoting the police to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, leaving Fahim dead on the spot, said the SP.

However, other associates of Fahim managed to flee the scene. Later, Police recovered the dead body and sent it to Madaripur Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Ripon Chakrabarty, a lecturer of Govt. Nazimuddin University College in the district, was badly hacked inside his home in Madaripur on June 14, amid a countrywide crackdown against militants and criminals.

Three persons took part in the attack and one of them was caught by locals. Later they handed over him to police.

Police identified him as Golam Faizullah, of Chapainawabganj.

Following the incident, SI Auyb Ali of Sadar Police Station filed a case accusing Golam Faizullah Fahim, Jahim, Mejbah, Raihan, Polash and Salim on Friday.

Earlier on Friday, a court placed Fahim on a 10-days remand. Judicial Magistrate Saidur Rahman passed the order when sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station Abdul Barek, also the investigation officer of a case filed over the incident, produced Fahim before his court seeking a 15-day remand.

Ripon Chakraborty was admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital and he is now out of danger, said the doctor.
