BNP-Jamaat men attack Noakhali vote centres, 6 presiding officers hurt

BNP leaders and activists allegedly hacked six people including an on-duty presiding officer and snatched away election martial including ballots form a polling station at Natershwaor in Sonaimuri Upazila on Saturday night.

Among the injured, one is identified as Presiding Officer Mahmudul Hasan, the upazila family planning officer.

Supporters of Zainul Abedin Farroque, BNP candidate for Noalhali-2 constituency, allegedly unleashed terror activities by attacking different polling centres in the district.

The incident took place at Nateswar union's Maddhya Nateswar Ebtedayii Nurani Madrasa polling centre around 10:30 pm, said Elias Faruque, superintendent of Noakhali police.

Being informed about the attack, a team from Sonaimuri police station rushed in and fired several rounds of gunshots on the air to disperse the attackers, he said.

Police were conducting drives to recover the election materials till filling of this report around 12:30am, said the police super.

After rescuing four injured including Mahmudul, police took them to Noakhali General Hospital.

Meanwhile, Mahmudul was sent to Dhaka by an ambulance as his condition was critical, he said.

Awami League also alleged several incident of terror attacks in an emergency press conference held at AL president’s Dhanmondi office at 12:30am, early hour of Sunday.

AL joint general secretary Abdur Rahman also alleged that Jamaat-Shibir activists burned an AL leader's house at 05 No. Barobkunda Union, Nodaliya, Sitakunda in Chattogram by hurling petrol bomb at around 12:15am.
