‘Drug trader’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

A drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Hneela Domdomia Checkpost in Teknaf upazila early Monday.

The deceased was identified Shamsul Prokash Bharmaia Shamsu, 39, son of late Mohamamd Hossain of Sikderpara in Hneela union and a listed drug trader of the Home Ministry.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station said that police arrested Shamsu on Sunday night.

Gleaning information from Shamsu, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 2 am to recover arms and Yaba.

Sensing the presence of police, his fellow drug traders opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back, triggering the gunfight that left Shamsu dead on the spot, said the OC.

Police recovered two pistols, 12 rounds of bullet and 20,000 Yaba tablets from the spot.

Three policemen were injured in the gunfight, said the OC.
