Vessel movement at Chattogram Port resumed after a standstill for 3 hours due to a collision between a feeder ship and an oil tanker on the Karnaphuli Channel of Chattogram Port.

Omar Faruque, Secretary of Chittagong Port Authorities, confirmed this to journalist on Friday noon.

Earlier, two marine vessels collided with each other on the Karnaphuli Channel of Chattogram Port leading to a standstill of vessel movement temporarily on the channel around 8:30am Friday.

The marine vessels were identified as Express Mahananda, a feeder ship and MT-Burgan, the oil tanker.

The accident took place while the Express Mahananda was arriving at the port setting journey from Sri Lanka with 750 containers and the empty oil tanker MT-Burgan was leaving the port. Both of the vessels collided each other at that time.

Omar Faruque said, “The collision took place near the Chittagong Dry Dock and the Boat Club of the Karnaphuli channel on Friday morning.”

He also informed that the port authorities suspended vessel movement on the channel for the time being.

“No vessel was reported to have sunk. Five tugboats were engaged to direct the ships towards safe distance. For this reason, vessel movement on the channel was suspended temporarily,” he added.

Both ships suffered damage but no casualty was reported in the incident.
