3 killed in ‘gunfights’ in Dhaka, Cumilla, N’ganj

Three people were killed in separate “gunfights” with law enforcers in Dhaka, Cumilla and Narayanganj early today. 

In Dhaka, a suspected criminal was killed in an alleged shootout with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Basila Garden City in Mohammadpur area.

Deceased Tanvir Ahmed Anik, 36, was the leader of notorious criminal gang 'Seven Star group', sad Lt Col Ashique Billah, commanding officer of Rab-2.

Anik was accused in at least seven murder cases and he was charged in all the cases, the Rab official said.

On information that fugitive Anik will enter the capital through Bosila Garden City, the elite force members set up a check post there.

But sensing presence of the law enforcers, Anik and his cohorts opened fire on Rab-2 team around 3.45am, triggering a “gunfight”, he said.

Anik was hit by bullets during the “gun battle”, the Rab officer said. He was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead.

Two firearms, five bullets and some sharp weapons were recovered from the spot, the Rab official said.

‘Seven Star group’ is involved with extortion and murders in Agargaon and Mohammadpur area of the capital, Lt Col Ashique added.

In Cumilla, a drug peddler, Md Tofayel, was killed in what police said was a “gunfight” at Rajapara Chowmohoni in Sadar South upazila around 2:15am.

Abdullah Al Mamun, officer in charge of Cumilla Sadar South Model Police station, said acting on a tip-off, a special team of Sadar South police conducted an anti-drug drive in Rajapara Chowmohoni area.

Sensing danger, the drug peddlers opened fire at police forcing them to retaliate, which triggered a “gunfight”.

When the criminals managed to flee the scene, police found bullet-hit Md Tofayel and rushed to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The OC said, "Tofayel is accused in as many as six cases including drug, mugging and robbery. Police seized a LG with one round cartridge, a knife and 400 pieces of Yaba."

In Narayanganj, Lipu alias Boma Lipu, 25, an accused in at least 16 cases, were killed in a “gunfight” with detectives at Dapa Balur Math in Fatulla around 3:00am.

A shooter gun and a bullet were recovered from the spot, our Narayanganj correspondent reports quoting Kamrul Hasan, a sub-inspector of Narayanganj Detective Branch of police.

Police had earlier declared Tk 10,000 bounty for information leading to his arrest.
