12 Jamaat leaders held in Chattogram

Police have detained 12 top leaders of Chattogram city unit of Jamaat-e-Islami during a drive at a house in Sugandha Residential Area in the port city.

Among the arrestees, Mohammad Shahjahan is the ameer of Jamaat city unit while Nazrul Islam and Mohammad Ullah are the general secretary and organising secretary respectively, said Mizanur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner (north zone) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP).

On information, a team of police from Panchlaish Police Station conducted a drive on the fourth floor of a six-storey building in Sugandha Residential Area in the city and detained 12 Jamaat leaders including Shahjahan, Nazrul and Mohammad Ullah while they were in a meeting around 11.30pm, the official said.

“They sat in a meeting around 11:30pm last night for planning to conduct subversive activities in the city,” he said.

“During the drive, police also recovered seven crude bombs, a number of machetes and cleavers and some papers from the roof of the building,” Mizanur Rahman said.

“Filing of a case in this connection was under way with Panchlaish Police Station,” the police official added.
