Defying international law, India is allegedly drawing water from the Feni river without any permission of Bangladesh authorities through setting up water pumps at the zero line on Feni border, media reports.

The Bangladesh authorities have already asked the neighbouring country to refrain from drawing water of the river, sources from ministries of water resources and foreign affairs said.

According to the sources, India requested Bangladesh for supplying of 1.12 cusecs of drinking water from the Feni river for residents of Sabroom city of Indian state Tripura in January 2010.

Considering the request from the humanitarian aspect, Bangladesh internally decided to supply the water to India but the decision was not informed them as the secretary-level meeting between two sides was not held.

Later, Indian authorities started pumping out 35 to 40 cusecs of water from different points of the river.

Bangladesh asked Indian authorities to stop drawing water in several technical level meeting of Joint River Commission and also asked Indian delegation about their steps over withdrawing pumps from the river.

In reply told Bangladesh that they will explained the matter after receiving decision from upper level of the Indian government.
