There is nothing serious about the resignation remark made by Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi in the midst of criticism of the rising onion rates, Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader said on Wednesday.

"It's not a question of resignation. He may have made the comment as he is in charge of the ministry, "said Obaidul Quader, speaking at the Secretariat to reporters.

The trade minister reportedly said in a views-exchange meeting in the city on Tuesday that if onion prices drop with his resignation then his resignation is a matter of a second.

"The cabinet is not responsible for assessing a minister's performance and it has no right to make any decisions in this regard. This is the prime minister's power, and it will be her choice who is going to be in the cabinet or who is not going to. I don't want to comment on it, "said Quader.

Responding to a question about the price hike of essentials, Quader, also the General Secretary of the Awami League, said that there is no reason to deny the fact that the market is now a bit unstable, and that the government is trying to control it.
