Why DUCSU elections not being held: HC

The High Court on Sunday asked the government and Dhaka University authorities to explain why inaction in holding the unviversity's central students' union should not be declared unlawful.

The election had been held since 1990 for electing the officer bearers of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), an elected body which played a critical role in the movement for independence and democracy.

Hearing a writ petition, the High Court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned why DUCSU elections should not be held immediately.

An HC division bench comprising justice Naima Haider and justice Abu Taher Md. Saifur Rahman passed the order following writ petition filed by a former vice president and a former general secretary of DUCSU and a student.

The education secretary and the Dhaka University's vice chancellor, the proctor and the registrar have been made respondents and asked to come up with explanations within the next four weeks.

On last Thursday, former DUCSU VC Sultan Muhammad Mansur Ahmed, GS Mustaq Hossain and current student Zafrul Hassan Nadim filed the writ petition.

Lawyer Subrata Chowdhury represented the petitioners while deputy attorney general Mokhlesur Rahman was present on behalf of the state at the court.
