IPU conference: Bring out cars only when needed, Kamal urges Dhaka dwellers

The home minister today requested Dhaka dwellers not to bring out their cars unless absolutely necessary as a five-day Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference kicks off today.

There is no security threat and law enforcers promptly respond to any intelligence they receive, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told journalists in reply to a query while visiting the South Plaza of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad, one of the venues of the conference.

A mega conference of world parliamentarians kicks off this evening in Dhaka promising to focus on ways and means to end political and economic inequality for upholding democracy and human rights.

Asked whether, any guests refused to attend the IPU conference regarding the ongoing security issue in the country, the minister said, he did not know of any such case and according to the information from the immigration, 1150 delegates from 132 countries have already arrived in the country.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury and IPU President Saber Hossain Chowdhury will be present at the inaugural programme this evening at the South Plaza of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad.

Regarding the HSC examination on April 2 and April 4, the home minister urged Dhaka dwellers to help and assist so that the students can reach the exam venues on time.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque, said the delegates are staying at 15 hotels around the city where security measures have been strengthened. No other guests will be allowed to stay at these hotels during this period, he added.
