Both of the duo belong to JMB’s Sarwar-Tamim group

A Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) team of Rangpur zone arrested two members of a new faction of banned Islamist outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (New JMB) from Dinajpur’s Raniganj area on Sunday midnight.

The arrestees are Selim and Khademul Islam.

The arrests have been confirmed at a press briefing held at RAB 13 headquarters in Rangpur’s Station Road area on Monday.

RAB 13 Commanding Officer Atikullah said: “We have come to know that both the arrested militants belong to JMB’s Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury and Sarwar Jahan faction.

“Selim, hiding his genuine identity, was secretly involved in collecting funds and members for JMB in the locality while Khademul was hiding in Dhaka after changing his previous outlook – long hair and beard.”

He said being tipped off that Khademul had arrived in the locality to have a secret meeting with Selim, a RAB team arrested the duo from Raniganj Rameswarpur Darul Huda Fazil Madrasa area.

“During primary investigation, both of them admitted to taking baiyat (oath of allegiance) and planning sabotage in the locality,” he added.

Atikullah further said the arrestees would be produced before court seeking remand to glean more information about their organisation.
