Chhatra League has expelled an activist and suspended 18 others from the organisation over factional clashes and vandalism in two Dhaka University dormitories this month.

All the 19 are DU students.

The pro-Awami League student front announced the decision in a press release issued on Wednesday.

Talking to The Daily Star, BCL General Secretary SM Jakir Hossain yesterday said they took organisational steps against the 19 for their involvement in anti-organisational activities. The action was taken in line with recommendations from the BCL's DU unit.

On April 20, two Chhatra League factions, led by Salimullah Muslim Hall unit President Tahsin Ahmed Rasel and General Secretary Mehedi Hasan Taposh, clashed in the dormitory over “grabbing seats”.

Carrying machetes, iron rods and sticks, supporters of the BCL factions attacked each other, leaving at least 12 students injured, said witnesses.

The BCL central committee expelled Salman of Bijoy Ekattar Hall and suspended Masud, Pranto, Sajib, Shuvo, Riad, Rafiqul and Sobuz of SM Hall from the organisation in connection with the incident.

In another incident, two BCL factions backed by Sir AF Rahman Hall unit president and general secretary clashed in the dormitory on April 6.

The clash ensued following a dispute over watching a Bangladesh-Sri Lanka cricket match on TV. Five BCL men were injured in the clash.

The student front suspended Raju Ahmed, Rashed Rajon, Apel Mahmud, Saddam Hossain, Salauddin Ahmed Sazu and Monzur Ahmed Rana from the organisation in connection with the incident.

Five more BCL men of the dormitory were suspended for their involvement in a factional clash at the hall on April 23 over sitting at the canteen. The clash left at least eight activists injured.

The five are Rasel, Nahid, Rashed, Faruk and Jamil.
