A girl reportedly committed suicide at her house in Uttara of Dhaka as she could not obtain GPA-5 in Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam this year.

Deceased, Sanjida Islam Nova, 16, daughter of Nazrul Islam, was the first girl in her class at Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Govt High School in Uttara, said her uncle Nasir Uddin.

Family members found her body hanging from the ceiling fan with a scarf at her house in Sector-7 of Uttara around 6:45 am, he said.

Sanjida had gossiped for a long time with her family members till 1:00 am last night and was supposed to go out for the morning walk with her father, Nasir lamented.

But she did not respond to the call around 6:15 am today. Later, family members broke open the door and found the body, he added.

Family members said that she tried to accept her result (GPA-4.73) though she expected A+ in all subjects.

The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College for autopsy, said Abdur Razzak, officer-in-Charge (investigation) of Uttara Police Station.

A case of unnatural death has been filed with the police station in this regard, he said.

“Sanjida, who was active in extra-curricular activities, might commit suicide over frustration,” the police officer said.

The results of SSC and equivalent examinations were published on May 4.
