Prices of rice on the rise

Prices of rice are on the uptrend in the capital as well as the country in the retail and wholesale markets.

The prices of rice increased by Tk. 2 to 10 a kilogram in the city’s wholesale markets in span of a week.

The prices of finer varieties, including Miniket and Najirshail, and the prices of coarse varieties, including Swarna and Lata, are being increased.  

Coarse variety of Swarna is now selling at Tk. 45 to 47 per kilogram in retail markets, while it was being sold at Tk.32 to 35 last week.

The businessmen are apprehending of rice deficit if the weather is not good. In that case, import may be required.

Visiting the retail and wholesale markets at Jatrabari and Babu Bazaar on Tuesday (May 09), it was found that the retailers are spreading rumors of artificial crisis and selling coarse rice at Tk. 45 to 47 which was being sold in the wholesale markets at Tk. 35 to 36.

The retailers said that rice supply is short following flash flood in different parts of the country. The wholesalers blamed the retailers for more rise of rice prices.

Abdur Rahim, proprietor of Farid Rice Agency at Babu Babar, said that the supply of rice is closed from auto mill. For this reason, the prices of rice increased.
