Rana among 10 indicted in Rana Plaza case

Charges were framed against 10 accused, including Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana, on Sunday for violating building code in constructing Rana Plaza that collapsed in 2013, killing at least 1,129 people.

The charges were pressed this afternoon with the court of Dhaka Divisional Special Judge M Atowar Rahman.

Sohel Rana, his father Abdul Khalek, mother Marjina Begum and others were among the charge-sheeted accused.

Among the 16 accused, the court dropped six others from the charges and set July 5 for recording testimony of the witnesses.

A total of 1,129 people, mostly garment workers, were killed and some 2,515 others injured as Rana Plaza came down crushing in Savar on the outskirts of the capital on April 24, 2013.

On June 1, after two years of the Rana Plaza tragedy, the criminal investigation department (CID) of police pressed charges against 42 people, including Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana, in two cases.

Of the total 41 accused, 25 remained fugitive while 16 were in jail now in the killing case.

On April 24, 2013, Rajuk filed a case with Savar Model Police Station against Sohel Rana for violating the Bangladesh National Building Code.

Police also filed another case accusing six people, including Sohel Rana, on April 25 of committing murders.

Police arrested Sohel Rana on April 28, 2013.
