A Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader was shot to death by unidentified gunmen at Damodar in Khulna’s Phultala upazila on Thursday night.

The deceased is Sardar Alauddin, 45, organising secretary of district BNP.

Officer-in-charge (investigation) of Phultala police station Hawlader Sanwar Hossain Masum said a gang of five miscreants in two motorcycles swooped on Alauddin at his business establishment, Mithu Enterprise, in front of his house around 10:00pm.

They opened fire on the BNP leader, leaving him dead on the spot, he said.

On information, police rushed in to recover the body, the police officer said from the spot around 11:40pm.

The reason behind the killing could not be known immediately.

The party's Khulna district unit organising secretary Alauddin was at his business organisation in front of his house in Fultala Bazar when the miscreants opened fire on him around 10:00pm on Thursday, police said quoting witnesses.

Fultala police station inspector Sanwar Hossain Masum said Alauddin's associate 'Nawsher' was also injured in the attack. He has been admitted to Khulna General Hospital.

The police officer said the miscreants came on two motorcycles and fled the scene immediately after opening fire.

Alauddin was a former chairman of Fultala Upazila Parishad.
