Flood hits 1.38 lakh people, 466 villages in Sylhet: Govt

Around 466 villages in eight upazilas of Sylhet district were affected by the flood triggered by onrush of hilly water and incessant rainfall, according to government estimate.

As per the data of the Flood Control Centre at the deputy commissioner’s office, the flood left some 1.38 lakh people of 17,858 families marooned in the district.

Some 4,491 houses were damaged while 4,330 hectares of Aush and Aman seedbeds washed away by the floodwater.

Besides, academic activities at some 200 educational institutions remained suspended.

According to the sources at Sylhet Water Development Board, the water of the Surma River was flowing 53cm above the danger level at Kanaighat point at 3 pm on Thursday while that of the Kushiara 63cm above the red mark at Sheola point, 62cm at Amalsadi point and 12cm at Sherpur point.

Meanwhile, the district administration has so far distributed 275 tonnes of rice and Tk 4.55 lakh among the flood-affected people, said additional deputy commissioner Shahidul Islam Chowdhury.

On the other hand, some 78 medical teams were working to combat waterborne diseases like diarrhoea, skin diseases, pneumonia and lungs-related complexities.  

Meanwhile, the flood situation started to improve in Kulaura, Juri and Baralekha upazilas of Moulvibazar district as there was no rain in the last two days.

Road communication between Baralekha and Juri upazilas remained snapped as the connecting road went under water while some 184 educational intuitions were still closed, said sources at the district administration.

However, the flood situation of Rajnagar upazila remained static.
