Govt. reconstituted NHRC, PM tells JS

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said the present government led by the Awami League had reconstituted the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to make it independent and neutral.

"After coming to power in 2009, the AL government had reconstituted the NHRC through enacting the National Human Rights Commission Act," the prime minister said while replying to a query from treasury bench member Kamal Ahmed Majumder (Dhaka-15) at the Jatiya Sangsad. 

The government also has increased the number of members of the commission, said the PM, adding that in light of the Paris Principal of the United Nations, the government reconstituted the NHRC through appointing a chairman and six members in June, 2010.

The government is pledge-bound to develop and protect human rights in the country through strengthening the commission, she added.
