The Supreme Court today extended the stay on a ban order over operating mobile courts, giving executive magistrates two more weeks to run activities.

A six-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the stay order for two weeks this morning.

The order came during hearing on three leave to appeal petitions filed by the government challenging the High Court verdict that had declared the mobile courts unconstitutional.

The government filed the petitions on July 2 seeking an extension of the SC's earlier stay order.

Delivering a verdict on three writ petitions on May 11, the HC declared unconstitutional the rules under which executive magistrates run mobile courts.
