Following a violent assault on Capitol Hill, the Mayor of Washington DC extended the general emergency for 15 days on Wednesday. The decision comes in the wake of rioting by thousands of Trump loyalists who marched into and attempted to lay siege to the US Capitol building. The police said that at least four people were killed in the shooting, including a woman who was shot dead and three others who died in a medical emergency.

"The public emergency order, which includes the ability to call a curfew, was extended by Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser for 15 days or until January 21, the day after the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden," a Bloomberg article said.

More than 30 demonstrators have also been detained by the police so far for breaching the curfew imposed in Washington DC.

During the riot, Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol destroyed the office of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Reports said that a large mirror in her office was smashed by rioters.

In the meantime, the House voted unanimously to reject President-elect Joe Biden's objection, secure his victory in Arizona, and join the Senate in upholding the election results there. This comes a day after the Democrats, with challengers Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, secured both Georgia Senate seats, confirming the party's dominance over the US Senate.
