A New York court ordered Sheikh Mahatab Miah's arrest on October 21 last year.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is looking for Bangladeshi-born US citizen Sheikh Mahatab Miah for theft of government funds.

Mahatab alias Nipu, a resident of Queens, New York, has also been charged with conspiracy to steal government funds and aggravated identity thefts.

He is wanted for his alleged involvement in a Stolen Identity Refund Scheme, the FBI said.

Criminals file fraudulent tax returns using stolen identities to obtain tax refunds in the names of the citizen victims.

Mahatab allegedly obtained tax refunds of $114,000 in bank accounts controlled by him and cashed the sum between September 2011 and March 2015 in New York and elsewhere.

A New York court ordered his arrest on October 21 last year after he was charged with conspiracy to steal government funds, theft of government funds, and aggravated identity theft.

The FBI has published and distributed posters in Bangla and English, offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to Mahatab’s arrest.

Born in 1964 in Bangladesh, Mahatab is a naturalised US citizen. He has worked as a driver for a ride-sharing service and also owns a deli in Queens.
