The Indian Supreme Court today refused to grant interim bail to Justice (retd) CS Karnan who was arrested from Coimbatore yesterday.

Karnan had moved the Supreme Court seeking bail and suspension of six-month sentence awarded to him, The Times of India reports.

A division bench of the apex court said that the arrest order for Karnan was passed by seven-judge bench and it cannot grant any relief to the former judge as it was a binding order and cannot be modified by another bench.

Absconding former Calcutta High Court judge C S Karnan was arrested on Tuesday by the West Bengal CID from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, more than a month after the Supreme Court sentenced him to six months imprisonment for contempt of court.

Sixty-two-year-old Karnan, who retired from service on June 12, had been "hiding" in the resort for the last few days and tried to resist the team of CID officers from West Bengal when it went there to arrest him according to The Times of India.
